1pass the buck: refuse to take responsibility

I don’t know enough about it to decide, so I’ll pass the buck to you.

The reason why no work ever gets done here is that too many people pass the buck

2have words with sb.: have an argument or quarrel with sb. 与某人争吵 (但是 have a word with sb.

I had words with my girlfriend last night. She said she never wanted to see me again.

The idiom “have words with sb.” is entirely different from “have a word with sb.”  成语“have words with sb.”和“have a word with sb.”

3as fussy as a hen with a chick: care about the very little things

That’s a small matter. Do not be as fussy as a hen with a chick.

I don’t like people who are as fussy as a hen with a chick.

4stand in someone’s / something’s way: prevent someone from doing something or prevent something from happening

If any of my children wanted to live away from home, I certainly wouldn’t stand in their way如果我的任何一个孩子要离开家庭,我绝不会阻拦。

The only thing now standing in the way of further progress is lack of money.

5at / from the bottom of one’s heart: with one’s deepest thoughts or feeling

I love you from the bottom of my heart

She told me she quitted the job from the bottom of her heart.

6behind someone’s back: without the knowledge of the person concerned, esp. because he would not disapprove of or not like what is done or said  在某人背后;背地里

A true friend will not say unpleasant things about you behind your back真正的朋友是不会在背后说你坏话的。

They sold the house behind their brother’s back.

7make up one’s mind: decide, come to a decision

When I was 14 or 15, I just couldn’t make up my mind about a career.

I’ve made up my mind to get married and I want to marry you more than anyone else in the world.

8tear one’s hair: be very anxious or worried about something

She must have taken some of the pills before we were due to arrive—not enough to kill her of course—and waited for us to rush in, tear our hair, attend to her and blame ourselves.

9You don’t say?: Is that true? (used to express one’s surprise after being told something; also, sometimes used as a humorous reply to a statement whose truth is beyond doubt)

“We’re going to South Africa for our holiday.”  “You don’t say?”

“Some of the people in this office can be very stupid.”  “You don’t say?”

                        Pass the Buck

A: I’d like to have a word with you, Mr. Smith.

B: What’s the matter? Be seated, please.

A: Ok, thanks. I’ve been working in the sales department for three years. I find it hard to get along with Alexander, who is as fussy as a hen with a chick. He usually passes the buck to others whenever he himself should have been responsible for something. I don’t think he has the EQ to be a leader. Furthermore, he stands in my way when I use some strategies to promote sales. I can’t work with him any longer, and this is from the bottom of my heart.

B: Go on.

A: Sorry, sir. I know it is not decent to say behind his back. But I can’t stand it. I’ve made up of my mind to resign. This is my resignation.

B: Try to be calm, please.

A: What’s more, Alexander often has words with me for no reason.

B: Don’t tear your hair. Besides yours, I’ve heard a lot more complaints from other colleagues about Alexander. He has bad relations with most of the workmates.   It shouldn’t be you who decide to leave. Instead, it is him that I should ask to leave.

A: You don’t say?

B: That’s true. It’s no kidding matter in making changes in personnel and I’m serious.

A: 真的吗
